Meet Deborah DiMare
Deborah DiMare has spent more than twenty years asking a question most of her industry avoids: what is this actually made of?
An interior design consultant, author and educator, she was a designer on the TLC series “In a Fix” before turning her practice toward materials — the flame retardants in the foam, the stain treatments on the upholstery, the plastic sold as leather. Her work is built around indoor air, off-gassing, and what a room releases into the space where people sleep and breathe.
Her firm, DiMare Design, specializes in organic textiles, sustainable furniture and less-toxic finishes, sourced entirely without animal materials. She says less-toxic rather than non-toxic on purpose. Almost nothing is truly non-toxic, and she’d rather tell clients what a material actually is than sell them a word.
She works across all spaces and all ages, from nurseries to homes designed for aging in place. Her position is simple and still unusual in her field: your house and your body are one system. Most designers treat them as separate problems. She doesn’t (and she loves animals!).
Deborah also heads VeganDesign org, where she educates consumers and designers about humane & healthy design.

Deborah is showing the world that less toxic, healthier, durable and luxurious faux alternatives can easily replace wool, fur, leather & other animal derived materials. She believes in designing sensory environments free from tragedy and despair.
