If you’ve been getting the itch to redecorate your rental, it might be time to channel your creative energy into some interior design projects! Findstack states (1) that today, 62% of employees work remotely at least occasionally. Furthermore, the number of people who work remotely has increased by 159% since 2009, which means that many of us are spending more time at home than ever before. That’s why there has never been a better time to express yourself through your decor.
But if you live in a rental property, you might be wondering how much you’ll really be able to personalize your space. Thankfully, you’ll be surprised by everything you can do without potentially upsetting your landlord. And after browsing the furniture and decor selections at Vegan Design, you’ll be able to redecorate your rental with cruelty-free home goods! Here’s how to redesign your rental to suit your family’s specific needs.

Set Up A Home Office
Perhaps you have a guest room that is rarely used, or maybe you have plenty of space in your living room to set up a desk with an accompanying storage system. If you want to maximize your productivity when you work from home (2), creating a designated home office space is the best way to do so!
You’ll need a few pieces of furniture for your office:
- Select a desk with enough room for all the items you need to use on a daily basis.
- Choose an ergonomic chair so that you don’t experience discomfort in your neck, back, and shoulders during the workday.
- Pick up a desk lamp to avoid eye strain while working.
It doesn’t hurt to pick up a few tools that you can specifically use for storage, too. For instance, if you have the space, you could get a filing cabinet. If you’re short on space, you can get a pencil holder for your desk, as well as a small file organizer or even a basket for odds and ends.
And finally, don’t forget to add your personal flair! While decorating your office, remember not to do anything that breaks your lease – for example, you should ask your landlord for permission before painting. But you can hang photos, posters, or artwork on the walls!
Children’s Rooms
Even if you’re renting right now, you can still personalize your kids’ rooms! You can let your kids choose a theme and begin working from there. For instance, if your child wants a dinosaur-themed room, you can pick up dinosaur stuffed animals, posters, and bedding!
Chances are, your children have their own unique ideas for decorating their rooms, but there are a few things you’ll probably want to do to make these spaces cute, cozy, and safe:
- Look for bedding, furniture, and decor made from natural materials, like cotton sheets and bamboo furniture.
- If your landlord will allow you to paint the walls with your child’s favorite color, choose paints that are non-toxic.
- Try some DIY projects to create unique eco-friendly decorations, such as mobiles made with hemp and wood from your local craft supply store.
Your kids might ask you for some changes that you can’t necessarily make to their rooms because you’re not the homeowner. But remember, kids grow up fast – in a couple of years, they will probably want to redecorate again!

Relaxation Space
If you love yoga or meditation, you might want to create a soothing space in your rental where you can focus on quiet practices like this. It can be hard to find a moment for yourself in the midst of your busy lifestyle, so designing a relaxation space is a great way to get calm and centered when your world feels chaotic.
If you’re wondering how to design a relaxation space, here are a few ideas to inspire you:
- Get a non-toxic yoga mat that you can use for your practice. Feel free to choose a mat in your favorite color!
- If you can’t paint the walls, hang tapestries with patterns that you love.
- Choose warm lighting to set the mood and consider placing some plants around the room for a natural vibe.
Entertainment Room
Do you ever feel like your rental lacks an area where you and your guests can relax, watch TV, or even play video games? You can designate a particular space as an entertainment room!
If you don’t have a basement or spare room that you’ll be furnishing, you might choose to redecorate your living room so that it functions as a comfortable entertainment space.
A comfortable couch, coffee table, ottomans, and end tables are all essential purchases. It’s easy to overspend on furniture when you’re designing this kind of space.
StampinFool states (3) that on average, you can expect to spend approximately $32,150 furnishing a 300 square foot living room. And with the average person already spending $1964 per month on rent for a two-bedroom apartment according to Apartment Guide (4), you probably don’t want to spend that much money as you redesign your rental!
But you can easily save by using a few simple, frugal tricks:
- Shop online to compare prices on furniture and look for ecommerce stores that are offering deals.
- Ask your loved ones if they have any furniture or decor they’re looking to give away.
- Check out thrift stores! You’ll be amazed at what you can find at significant discounts.
For an entertainment space, you’ll definitely want to invest in high-quality technology. You might want to check out electronics retailers so that you can ask their sales representatives about which televisions, speakers, or gaming systems they would recommend.
So there you go, 4 fun & easy ways to redecorate your rental!
